The Department of Home Affairs will, on Friday, 22 March 2013, deploy its mobile offices in Khayamandi Informal settlement in Stellenbosch, Western Cape in order to issue Identity Documents and Birth Certificates to victims of a fire which destroyed their shacks.
The Mobile Offices and the officials from the Department of Home Affairs will be stationed at the informal settlement until the 26 March 2013.
A total of 900 shacks were burnt down, leaving about 4500 persons displaced and many without enabling documents, such as Identity Documents and Birth Certificates.
The Director General of the Department of Home Affairs, Mr Mkuseli Apleni, has waived fees that are required upon second application of such documents. This will allow for the victims of the fire in Khayamandi Informal settlement to apply for the Home Affairs documents for free.
