Twenty four undocumented Ethiopian nationals were escorted to the Brixton Police Station after a 16-seater white Toyota taxi they were travelling in was stopped by traffic officers during a Gauteng Traffic Department operation, in Braamfontein.
Of the 24 persons, 3 might be 15 years old. The driver of the vehicle is in custody as charges are being finalized.
Immigration Inspectorate officials were invited to assist with the investigation.
The 24 persons had no documentation. Also to be established is the likelihood that they were victims of human trafficking who came to South Africa via Zimbabwe. They may be moved to a place of safety as investigations unfold.
Officials from the Department of Home Affairs are investigating with other law enforcement agencies and social partners.
