Pretoria - The Home Affairs department will, as part of the government contribution, provide the family of Emidio Marcia, the Mozambican taxi driver, who died in police custody early this week, with the necessary documentation to enable them to provide him with a decent funeral.

In pursuance of this contribution, the Home affairs department is in contact with the Mozambican Embassy in Pretoria and has also visited relatives of Emidio Marcia in Daveyton, Benoni on Friday 01 March to discuss the sort of documentation that the family would require to give Emidio a decent funeral.

The Mozambican Embassy in Pretoria is in contact with Emidio’s father in Mozambique to finalise funeral arrangements. In this regard, the Home Affairs department stands ready to issue such necessary documentation as a death certificate and, if needs be, any documentation that may help facilitate the smooth movement of Emidio’s mortal remains across the border for a decent funeral in Mozambique.

Minister of Home Affairs, Naledi Pandor joins the government and people of South Africa in expressing her outrage at the circumstances leading to the death of Emidio Marcia. Accordingly, Minister Pandor extends her  thoughts and prayers and expresses her heartfelt condolences to the family of Emidio Marcia.
