The Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba, will embark on a door-to-door drive in Mpumalanga to raise awareness around issues pertaining to the late registration of birth (LRB) process.

The objectives of the LRB campaign include:

  • Encouraging undocumented and eligible citizens without birth certificates and identity documents to apply and be registered on the national population register;
  • Encouraging birth registrations within 30 days of delivery and ensure total compliance for early birth registration;
  • Preparing the nation for the discontinuation of the current LRB process after 31 December 2015; and
  • Introduction of new stringent measures for applications by undocumented citizens in 2016.
