The Minister of Home Affairs, Naledi Pandor will officially open Nkonkoni Senior Primary School in Libode, near Umtata in Eastern Cape on Wednesday, 09 April 2014, at 09h00.
Costing about R 16 million, the school, boasts classrooms, including a Grade R class, toilets, a multi-media centre, a library, a computer centre, a multipurpose-science laboratory, a nutrition centre, an administration block and rain- water harvesting tanks.
Minister Pandor will be accompanied by the MEC for Education in the Eastern Cape, Mr Mandla Makupula, the Mayor of O.R.Tambo District Municipality, Ms Nomakhosazana Meth, the Mayor of Nyandeni Local Municipality, Ms Thokozile Sokhanyile as well as King Ndamase ka Ndamase.
Nkonkoni Senior Primary School forms part of the Accelerated Schools Infrastructure Development Initiative (ASIDI), an extension of the broader Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Commission (PICC), led by President Jacob Zuma.
Through ASIDI, government seeks to eradicate all mud schools and inappropriate structures, as well refurbish dilapidated and ill equipped schools.
The programme includes the eradication and replacement of 496 mud schools, provision of water and sanitation to 1 257 schools and electrifying of 878 schools.
The opening of the school will be followed by a community imbizo, hosted by Minister Naledi Pandor. Minister Pandor will also hand-over the Smart-ID-Cards to their owners, who are mainly the first-time and elderly applicants.
