The Department of Home Affairs’ Finance and Supply Chain Management has been inundated with complaints and correspondence relating to fraudulent acceptance letters and/or invoice details and payment process letters. These scammers are targeting unsuspecting companies and suppliers using fraudulent letters claiming these letters are from the Department.
The fraudulent letters are signed off by a Ms N Moyo who claims to be from a Department of Finance within the Department of Home Affairs, bearing the Department’s physical and postal address. Some of the letters show Government Printing Works’ address but with the logo of the Department of Home Affairs.
Unsuspecting companies / suppliers receive a request for quotation from a person claiming to be working for the Department. Thereafter, a fraudulent acceptance letter is issued to the unsuspecting supplier with the delivery and payment details. Immediately after the fraudulent acceptance letter, another letter directing the unsuspecting supplier to deliver the goods as matter of urgency is issued. This letter further indicates that the payment will be made using a delivery note payment method. This is contrary to the Department’s policy of paying suppliers using a valid invoice.
The Department of Home Affairs therefore advises all suppliers and the business communities out there to be vigilant around matters of procurement. If in doubt, do not hesitate to contact the Department on this number: Mr Lunga Njwabule 012 - 406 4027 or Ms Thandeka Ngcobo 012 - 406 2749.
