Following a Cabinet meeting on 1 March 2017 it was announced that the business case was supported and that:
The Department must be positioned within the security system of the State so that it contributes to national security and is able to protect its people, systems and data. This will better enable the department to deliver against its full mandate as a critical enabler of inclusive economic development, national security, effective service delivery and efficient administration.
To implement this decision, the Department of Home Affairs has initiated a Repositioning Programme that will align with its modernisation programme and other transformation initiatives. The first step will be to release a Discussion Paper on Repositioning the Department of Home Affairs in for public comment and discussion. The inputs will inform the drafting of a White Paper that will provide the policy framework for drafting legislation that will define the mandate, role, status and obligations a Home Affairs of the future.
