Pretoria - Incoming Chairperson of the African Union and Minister Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will today, Friday 21 September, supported by Political Advisor Vusi Nhlapo and Legal Advisor Adv. Yoliswa Maya, depart for New York ahead of the 67th Session of the UN General Assembly scheduled to begin deliberations on 25 September 2012.
Minister Dlamini Zuma will attend this year’s General Assembly Session within the context of her recent election as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission which will require her attendance of the UNGA sessions on behalf of the African Union Commission.
The 67th Session of the UN General Assembly is convened to consider the issue of “the rule of law at the national and international levels” guided by the report of the UN Secretary-General Ban ki Moon titled“Delivering Justice: programme of action to strengthen the rule of law at the national and international levels”.
Minister and Chairperson of the AU Commission, Dr.Dlamini Zuma will in addition to attending the General Assembly hold a number of bilateral discussions on the margins of the UNGA, details of which will be released once the programme has been finalised and confirmed.
In addition to Heads of States and Government expected to address the Assembly, the President of the International Court of Justice, the President of the UN Security Council, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Administrator of the UNDP, The Executive Director of the UN office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Chairperson of the International Law Commission have also been invited to address the session.
Minister Dlamini Zuma is expected to return to South Africa on 28 September 2012 ahead of a number of events planned to coincide with her scheduled departure for Addis Ababa on 12 October for a hand-over ceremony organised for the 15 October 2012
