21 OCTOBER 2020

The Deputy Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Ms Makhotso Sotyu and the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Mr Njabulo Nzuza, in their capacities as District Development Model Champions, will embark on their maiden visit to Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality on Friday, 23 October 2020.

President Cyril Ramaphosa in the 2019 Presidency Budget Speech identified the pattern of operating in silos as a challenge which led to lack of coherence in planning and implementation and has made monitoring and oversight of government programme difficult. The consequence has been non optimal delivery of services and diminished impact on the triple challenges of poverty, inequality and employment. The President further called for the rolling out of a new integrated district based approach to addressing our service delivery challenges and localise procurement and job creation, that promotes and supports local businesses, and that involves communities.

The purpose of the Champions visit to Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality is to work together with the leadership of both provincial and local governments in managing the implementation of the District Model.

The visit will include a session with all Local Mayors and Municipality Managers in Dr RSMDM, briefing on water issues, walk-about at Taung Skull, Taung Dam 1 of Vaalharts Water and the Gender Based Violence (GBV) Centre. This will assist to get the status of the District in terms of economic recovery, job creation, addressing GBV and Covid-19 progress within the District.
