The Department of Home Affairs has supported the project of democracy by assisting more than 45 000 citizens who visited our offices over the weekend of 26 and 27 January 2019.
Citizens visited our offices and received the following services:
  • 25 799 collected smart ID cards
  • 13 467 applied for IDs
  • 4 410 collected green ID books
  • 1583 applied for and received Temporary Identification Certificates 
  • 106 duplicate ID cases were resolved.
The citizens responded positively to the Department extending its services over the weekend of voter registration and to the call to those who applied for Smart IDs to come and collect their documents. 
The response also underscores the importance of the partnerships the Department of Home Affairs has been able to strike with provincial and local government officials and structures to facilitate the collection of IDs. 
Over 2000 officials and senior managers were deployed across provinces to assist citizens. 
The Department warmly thanked all citizens who collected their smart ID cards. Citizens who are yet to collect or apply for smart ID cards will be able to use their old green ID books for identification purposes, including on elections day. 
Home Affairs encourages citizens to apply for and collect their smart ID cards because they are more secured than the old green ID books.
